Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
"What in the name of the Blind Protector are you talking about?" Adonis was staring at him now as if he'd just sprouted rabbit ears. Diana and I are just friends! We've been friends for a long time! She's just been upset and since a certain jealous furball doesn't exactly listen to her when she tries to tell him why she's upset, she's been talking to me." He shook his head. "Do you realize just how upset Diana has been?" He had a feeling this was what had been wrong with Hurricane, but it didn't make it any less annoying. He had his own romantic interest to pursue and it was not Diana. He had noticed that she had been spending quite a bit of time with him here lately, but he just assumed that she had needed some time away from Hurricane to cool down.
"You better be," he replied coldly, his gaze narrow and mistrustful. "You don't want to find out what happens if I find out you're lying."
The odds were racing through his mind, calculating how easily he could win this fight. Adonis was a trained mercenary, but in the confines of the tunnel and with the element of surprise, maybe he could get the upper hand and strike hard enough there wouldn't be time for Adonis to fight back. Lunge in mid-sentence, slam him against the wall behind him and give him a hard strike to the head, or grab him by the throat until he passed out... it was tempting, but unrealistic. And it horrified Hurricane to realize the odds disappointed him. He wasn't a violent cat, he shouldn't want to fight anyone, what was happening to him? He had never realized how jealous he could be.
Hurricane stepped back with a huff, ducking his gaze. "I've noticed," he replied gruffly. "It's... it's her fault, you know. She won't tell me what's the matter. Every time I try to help she just gets in my face."
"But she did tell you. You just didn't listen." He sighed and closed his eyes. This entire ordeal was beginning to give him a headache, but for Diana's sake, he supposed he would try to clear things up. "For starters, how would you have felt if Diana had chosen to only play with your little ones and made you discipline them all the time. She didn't want them to grow up spoiled and childish. Times are tough. The Regime is at war and one of your sons is a mercenary cadet. Diana tried to prepare them for their training. She was perhaps a bit too hard on them, but that was because she was worried. She wants them to have the discipline needed to survive times like this. To have you going behind her back and undermining every decision she makes infuriates her. Instead of being their father, you chose to be their friend." He shook his head. There was nothing wrong with playing with one's little ones, but discipline needed to play a role in their upbringing as well. "Instead of sitting her accusing me of trying to steal your mate, perhaps you should go and actually listen to Diana. She's not perfect and she shouldn't have yelled as much as she did, but you of all people should know just how sensitive she really is."
Diana was difficult to handle at the best of times. She was grumpy, stubborn, and a complete workaholic. She had undeniably been way to rough on her tykes. He could tell that much by their behavior in training. Each of them had their own demon to battle, but he did at least realize that Diana had only done what she thought necessary to help them survive. He started forward. "And for the record, my interest lies elsewhere. Diana is allowed to have friends is she not?" He shouldered past him. "Next time maybe just ask Diana before you make assumptions. She's honest if nothing else."
A low growl rumbled in his throat and he glared after Adonis, but the golden-eyed tom let him go.
He knew they were both wrong. You could be a cat's parent and their friend; hadn't he been friends with his own mother? She had been strict too, but when they got older especially they learned to get on just fine. Maybe he should have been a little more stern but he didn't see the harm in letting his young ones enjoy their lives for a little bit and not worry about the weight of all their duties. They were supposed to enjoy their youth while they had it! Playing with them would make them happy, it wouldn't make them any less decent when they were older. His tail lashed. He knew he was right.
But.... well, maybe it wouldn't hurt to talk to Diana one more time. To try and explain it all to her, so she'd understand. Adonis was right about one thing, his headstrong mate was doing her best. Maybe he had been a little but unfair.
"Yeah, okay," he murmured under his breath. "Okay."
Meanwhile, Diana had found a quiet spot to cool down. She couldn't believe he was being such a furball. After everything he was still refusing to listen to her. Their sons were in training now and they were still arguing like this. Maybe Adonis was right. Maybe they did need some time apart. She had been avoiding that honestly. She wanted to hold on to what little hope she had of salvaging their relationship, but maybe they were just too different.
She sighed as she let her head rest on her paws. She doubted their next conversation would go over well. It would probably end in another fight. She was tired of fighting. Emotionally speaking she was exhausted. She had always known that she wasn't exactly the family type of person, but for Hurricane she had been willing to give it a shot only to have it all come crashing down around her. Her sons hardly spoke to her, she was always fighting with Hurricane and once again she was almost always alone save for the times that Adonis came to keep her company and to vent his worries about Gardenia's current state. She pushed herself to her paws after a moment. She supposed it was about time she left again. She was a spy anyway so she was supposed to be out gathering information for Mars anyway.
He took a few more precious moments to calm himself down. His anger was still there, simmering under the surface, but he thought he could ignore it enough to seek her out. He turned the corner around the tunnel, this time carefully checking if anyone was coming beforehand, then trotted after where she had disappeared to. He wasn't entirely sure where she would have gone from here, but he'd figure it out; her scent still clung to the walls of the tunnel, faint but just enough for his keen senses to pick up.
Eventually he came upon his mate just as she was getting up to leave. Hurricane hesitated in the mouth of the entrance, blocking her from using that exit while he stared at her with conflicted golden eyes, utterly lost on how to even begin. He didn't want to start another fight, but that was all they seemed capable of doing now.
"What is it now? Are you going to accuse me of infidelity now?" Her words were bitter but held a note of pain as well. Honestly...Did he think she had no honor at all? She didn't have the energy left to argue with him though so she wasn't going to actively pick a fight this time.
"No Hurricane. No you shouldn't be. The fact that you would question my honor at all is insulting at best, especially coming from someone who has never taken even a single moment to understand why I am so upset in the first place. If you actually paid attention to what was going on around you, you would know that Adonis is clearly involved with Gardenia. He is a childhood friend that I went to for advice on a certain matter since my mate is to hair brained to actually listen to me." She was hurt and for once that was clear through the rage. She didn't have the energy to yell at him at this point. She just wanted to leave, to get some fresh air and then be on her way. She was a spy and she had been spending too much time in the tunnels as it was.
Hurricane hissed as he looked away. This was not what he came here to do, but it always happened. Every time they met now all they could do was fight. It took all his willpower not to respond right away but to focus on evening out his breathing. Maybe his anger wasn't as suppressed as he thought it was. "You can't control who you love," he said, softly. If she was in love with him her honor would not stop it, it would only stop her from acting on it. It would be easier if he could pretend she didn't care about Adonis, just as it would be easier if he didn't love Diana. But he did and even if it would be easier he knew he did not want to live in a world where they weren't together.
"And that is the problem. Did you ever stop to actually listen to what I was trying to say? Even with our sons you ignored my wishes and went about things in your own way. You made yourself out to be their friend and left any discipline they needed to me. Do you realize that they will hardly speak to me now?" Her ears flattened. "You never took the time to listen to me. Even now you didn't listen. I told you once before that Adonis was just a friend. You wouldn't even trust me enough to believe me then. You don't understand because you've never listened." She was hurt and angry. How could he not understand still when she had told him clearly why she was so upset so many times? Did her words really mean so little to him or did he just not care enough to listen?
"I do listen! I've listened every time. I've never stopped listening. But that doesn't mean I have to do everything you say. You can still be wrong, Diana, even if you think you aren't." He glared at her with golden eyes, the blue and white fur around his neck fluffing defensively. "You're not the only one who can raise kits. Didn't you ever stop to think it isn't my fault they don't talk to you? You were too harsh on them. That's why. They don't listen to you because you upset them. It isn't my fault they like my parenting!"
In the next moment Diana's paw connected with the side of Hurricane's jaw. Tears were beginning to form in her eyes. "Parenting? You called that parenting? You let them do anything they wanted! They could have gotten hurt! They could have gotten lost or sick! They wouldn't have been prepared for their training at all because they wouldn't understand basic discipline. You're their father not their friend Hurricane!" She turned away. "Maybe we're just too different after all..." She couldn't stand here and argue anymore. She just didn't have the energy. How dare he accuse her of being at fault for everything. How dare he not even try to understand...
She quickened her pace until she was racing through the tunnels. She turned down another dark opening before making a sharp right. If she went this way, there should be another exit. She needed fresh air. She needed to think and she just couldn't do that when she was trapped in the tunnels. None of them knew. She had tried her hardest to make sure they were prepared. The world was changing. It wasn't as safe as it once had been. She had wanted her sons to be strong, to be prepared to face the troubles ahead of them no matter how difficult they might be. Sure she had been tough on them, but she had done everything for them. At the time it hadn't seemed to matter whether they liked her or not. She had thought they would eventually understand...Now she wasn't so sure. Had everything she had done been for nothing? She blinked away more tears as she turned down yet another tunnel. It should be just ahead of her now...Finally a cool breeze welcomed her back onto the surface. She still didn't slow down until she had put some distance between herself and the tunnels where she had left Hurricane.
As she slowly came to a stop to catch her breath, she looked back the way she had come. She couldn't regret her sons, even if they hated her now, but maybe she had made a mistake. Opening up to Hurricane...She had thought that she could trust him, but in the end she had gotten burned. Her ears went flat against her head and she turned away once more. Once she was a bit calmer, she would try to hunt for a bit. That usually calmed her down when nothing else did.
