Scout Siren sat with her tail wrapped around her paws, her grey-blue eyes awaiting for her cadet to show up in HQ. She had told him to get a good night's rest at last night's ceremony, and planned on working him to death. She smiled, reminiscing on her own tiresome days as a cadet.
Unfortunately, the cadet in question had been so excited to train after his promotion that he barely sleeped a wink. How could he? This was what Cadet Primus had been dreaming about for as long as he could remember! The fluffy pitch-black tom marched into HQ with a spring in his step, and his head held proudly high. It wasn't like he didn't have a reason for it; he was Commander Mars' nephew, after all. He trusted in his uncle that this Scout Siren was one of the Regime's best, and would be a mentor worth of his talents. He would finally become a Scout worthy of his family name and his mother's high expectations!
"Scout Siren, right? No need for formalities, I'm ready to get started."

He hit the mark for her. Siren smiled widely. "Perfect!" The lady was nice when things went her way - so long as he didn't give her any reason to hit him over the head with a sweet, sweet Silence Rock, everything would go just fine! She stood up promptly and daintily trotted on. "Today I will be showing you around top-soil territory. I am going to show you the dangers first, so you better mind your paws and tail..." She giggled and sounded like she was whispering juicy details about Marti Gras or some other funky fiesta.
The young cadet nodded curtly, though he was slightly put off by his mentor's...spunky attitude when talking about danger. But nevertheless, her reasoning made sense. Cadet Primus was hardly ever let out of Post Kilo as a tyke, let alone taken to see the surface. He could only recall once or twice he saw the sky and grass when his father Hurricane managed to sneak him and his brothers to a tunnel exit. But even then they weren't allowed to explore. "If I'm going to learn how to patrol and hunt, I need to know what I should be looking out for," he agreed nonchalantly.

"Correct."
She led him north, and as they neared the surface, color became more vivid. The worm hole here was steep, so she had to climb up and pull herself out with her forelegs. The hole was narrow and inconspicuous from the top side. She shook off the dirt that clung to her white pelt, then peered around. She spoke softly as she surveyed the surrounding forest for any foxes, bears, or coyotes, "Before any patrol leaves the safety underneath, one must venture out alone first. Typically, the volunteer is a Mercenary." She looked down at him once she was certain that there weren't any larger animals of prey nearby, "Once you are sure there are no immediate dangers, such as predators or humans, you report that top!soil is 'clear.' However, in the case that the coast is not clear, you are to immediately dive back underneath as silently as you can and choose a different route. We are not out here to pick fights. We are out here to catch prey, and ensure that we do not become prey ourselves."
As they emerged from the perpetual darkness of the tunnels, Cadet Primus had to squint his eyes at the obscene brightness of the surface world, before they finally readjusted and he was able to take in all of the bright colors and intriguing sounds in wide-eyed awe. Seeing the surface world was always so incredible, nothing could ever compare to the feeling of wonder he had right at that moment. Heaving himself out of the hole with a push of his forelegs, the tom stood at attention and listened carefully as his mentor described standard surface patrol protocol. Though he had to use all of his willpower to not get distracted by the dozens brand new scents hitting his nose all at once. "Right," he affirmed, committing Siren's instruction to memory as best he could before asking a few questions. "You mentioned 'humans', which I guess is another term for twolegs, but what other types of predators are most commonly seen around our upper territory?"
Post by ♪♫▬○♥• valiance •♥○▬♫♪ on Feb 19, 2019 0:15:08 GMT -5
"Twolegs, yes," she nodded and shied her eyes away from him, "that's what I said."
"There's plenty of them," she began with a twinkle in her eye, "Foxes, badgers, coyotes, hawks, owls, rattlesnakes, scorpions, yellow jackets, fire ants, brown recluse, wolves, bobcats, cougars..." She rattled on with a smile and then trailed off, "There's definitely a thousand ways to die out here." Pressing on into the forest, she nimbly jumped over a log and followed a trail that had been obviously passed through before. "But other animals aren't the only dangers out here. Do not taste test anything juicy-looking without a death wish."
Well, that was one way to make your Cadet feel more at home in a new environment.
Cadet Primus blinked with a blank expression on his face, his mind reeling from the sheer number of dangers that could possibly kill him on the surface; he only recognized half of those names! But before he could say anything in response, Scout Siren had already turned and begun to walk away, heading deeper into the forest. He quickly shook his head to free himself from those anxiety-inducing thoughts and scampered after her. Obviously Siren was just messing with him, trying to test his courage. He'd bet a day's share of prey that the Regime hadn't seen those last few predators in generations. Wolves and bobcats and cougars? Yeah, right.
Though he did commit her warning about eating random berries to memory...just in case.

They passed by a plethora of hemlock and pine trees, though some oak and walnut were here and there as well. Siren was well adjusted to avoiding the sticks and stones that covered the forest floor without having to look down; she had learned to use her peripherals quickly, many years ago. It was so second nature to her now that she thought little of it. "Some Scouts still don't understand how to shut up and be quiet." She glanced over her shoulder, "I'm glad that you're already catching on." A movement caught her dull leaden-blue colored eyes and she peered beyond him. Having just spoken of the devils, she had expected a fox or coyote to be preying on her cadet.
Wouldn't that be terrifying? Her fur puffed up momentarily just before realizing that the movement had belonged to birds who were simply jumping from tree branch to tree branch. She allowed her breath to go, then chuckled to herself. Ha! Just feathers! Good, good... Her paws tingled with the excitement, so she carried on and traipsed to the left of a fir tree. Siren wasn't interested in the birds anyway. It wouldn't be fair to give the Cadet a hard prey to catch on his first day.
In actuality the reason Cadet Primus was so quiet was that he was too preoccupied on observing the brand new environment around him. He kept his golden gaze locked firmly on the ground as he side-stepped his way through and over the various sticks and stones that Scout Siren padded over without even thinking. Though upon his mentor's faint praise Primus glanced up and his face brightened with pride...leading him to stumble over an outward tree root that he barely avoiding stubbing his toes on. After maintaining his balance and dignity, the young tom noticed the she-cat's eyes fixed expressionlesly on the trees just a short distance away, though he didn't know why she was watching them until a pair of bird took off from the branches and flew over their heads.
Keeping close behind Siren, the duo walked in silence for a while longer before Primus finally decided to speak up again. "How far does our aboveground territory reach?" He was well-aware that the Regime's tunnels spread below nearly all of the clans, but he wasn't sure how much of that applied to the surface.

She suddenly stopped walking and turned to face him. "Every step you take away from the tunnels becomes more and more dangerous, Primus... Just remember that for now." She eyed him for a moment, wondering whether or not her words would truly sink in, then slid down a steep swiftly. She seemingly fell through a line of bushes, then popped out the other side of the hedge to wait for him. There was a wide lake here and it was nearly sunhigh.
Cadet Primus groaned inwardly and rolled his eyes as soon as Scout Siren turned away from him. 'That doesn't answer my question...' he deadpanned in his head, starting to become thoroughly tired with his new mentor's obsession with danger. The Scout Cadet hesitated once they reached the steep drop, and instead he watched carefully as the she-cat navigated her way down and appeared on the other side of the bush line. The tom himself was much slower and more cautious in his descent, almost scooting down the slope until he pushed his way through the foliage beside Siren. He immediately stared in awe as the sunlight hit the surface of the lake, making it glow brilliantly. "Woah..."
Cadet Primus stared at his mentor incredulously for a solid few seconds, arithmetic forming around his head as he attempted to decipher just what in the Blind Protector's name THAT was. Scout Siren was officially crazy, nuts, and full-on loco. Become the fish? What did that even...?
You've got to be kidding.
"For the love of- just say, in normal words, that you want to teach me to swim."
