Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Lionspirit waited for his apprentice at the camp entrance. His golden magestic fur held stars in it as it danced in an imaginary breeze. He took in a deep breath. It had been moons since he had been on Dayclan territory. He almost couldnt wait to start training his new apprentice.
Duskpaw was excited to meet his new mentor. As soon as he caught sight of the glittering tom he raced to meet him, then skidded to a halt in front of him and bowed his head deeply. "It's a honor, sir! Thank you for being my mentor!" He hadn't known Lionspirit when he was alive, but he had heard his uncle mention how the tom had died bravely when their clan was attacked, and he was proud to have someone so noble to train him.
He let out a deep purr, "Its an honor to have you as my apprentice." The large maine coon tom dipped his head to Duskpaw and gave a warm smile. "Are you ready?"
"Yessir, I'm ready!" An honor, to have him as an apprentice? Boy, Lionspirit was a nice cat! Duskpaw wasn't that special, though, so he wasn't sure that was true. But he'd try his best to prove he was a worthy apprentice! "What are we going to do?"
"Before we begin your training, I want to get to know you better. What do you think your skilled in the most?" The tom asked, his voice deep yet had a warm flow to it. "Battling, hunting, cleverness for example."
What was he good at? Duskpaw liked to lay out in the sun and soak up rays on a sunny day, or scuffle in the dirt with his friends. He won about as many fights as he lost, so he probably wasn't a good battler. He was a little big - not too tall, but thick-furred and fluffy - and he wasn't sure if that was good or bad for hunting. He wasn't super clever either. "I'm not really good at anything," he told him honestly, tipping his head back to look at his mentor. "I'm just okay."
Lionspirit smiled, "thats alright. You will discover what your best at during your training, Im sure. Come," Lionspirit turned and slipped out of the camp and out into the forest. Snow blanketed the forest floor and icicles glittered in the early morning sun. Birds were waking and beginning to sing as the sun rose and lit up the forest in a golden glow that reflected of the snow creating a beautiful sparkling artistry. "Now, I want to see your hunting crouch" he instructed, looking down at his apprentice with admirable golden eyes.
He was relieved Lionspirit didn't try to convince him otherwise. Explaining how unremarkable he was would've just depressed Duskpaw. He bounded out at his mentor's side, his head turned slightly to keep an eye on the older tomcat, as he tried to mimic his powerful strides. It was difficult, especially since his legs were shorter, so he looked a little comical instead of graceful.
As they stopped, he glanced appreciatively around them, then dropped into the crouch. He didn't crouch down far, just bent his legs a little and stretched them out, trying for more of a quick-but-smooth prowl, or something like that. He wasn't really sure.
"Not at all bad!" The large tom complimented. "That would work well for hunting rabbits! But try crouching down a little further. You dont want your prey to see you coming."
Hey, I guess I'm a natural at hunting rabbits! Happy with this thought, Duskpaw smiled as he lowered his white belly closer to the ground, arching his tail high over his spine and baring his teeth in a playful version of his most menacing snarl. Watch out prey, I'm coming for you! he thought gleefully.
Lionspirit laughed, "Well I definitely wouldn't want to mess with you." His golden eyes blinked warmly at his apprentice, "Would you like to try your skill on real prey?"
Almost trembling with excitement, the apprentice bounded ahead of him. He drew to a halt in front of one of the bushes, a white paw raised and ready to strike if shot out of it, then swept his gaze around the clearing. "What should I catch?" he whispered.
"Whatever you think you can catch" the broad tom mewed. "But keep in mind, if you hunt rabbits, They will hear you before they see you. Same with mice" he reminded his apprentice.
That sounded tricky. He crept along the edge of the forest and the grass, unsure really what he was looking for; there were so many different scents and sounds to focus on! A flicker of motion at the corner of his eye caught his attention and he froze. It was a rabbit, weaving through the trees confidently, ears twitching. Remember, it can hear you... Duskpaw gathered himself, crept a few steps closer, then shot after it. It spooked and fled before he could even get close.
Lionspirit had no sign of disappointment in his expression, only understanding. "Thats okay. There are plenty more. Besides, rabbits are really hard to catch. Some cats, especially the ones that live in the forest, catch rabbits in pairs. However, Dayclan cats live in the fields so we are used to catching them. And you will get there some day with practice. We can try again or find something else to hunt."
"You think so?" He stared after the prey with desolate, disappointed eyes. He had really wanted to catch something to show his mentor he was worthy, but he hadn't even been that close. He needed to run faster, or be quieter, or... something. His ears drooped. "I'll never be a warrior, will I? I don't know what to do. I don't have the instincts and I'm not good at this stuff."
