Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
She hated those NightClan cats. It was as if her life had flipped completely overnight. Sunpaw was always the kind of cat who preferred the light. Her name said so clear as day; she was a sunshine child. She liked the daylight, loved the light and the way it filtered through the leaves...and yet these blasted NightClan cats had come into their territory and without a word, they were no longer allowed out in the day. It made no sense to her how anyone could live in the darkness like this.
As she shuffled through the camp, forced to change her sleeping schedule to something entirely foreign, she found herself shivering at the chill of the night despite her long fur. She was practically half asleep, trudging through the camp dragging her paws, so much that she found herself toppling over someone's paw by accident.
"Hey, watch where you're–" she started irritably, before noticing that she didn't know this cat at all. She had never met her, even though she looked to be her age...
Then the smell hit her. A NightClan cat. Her eyes flashed in surprise and trepidation; gods, was this going to turn into a fight? Her fur puffed out in alarm, unsure of how these intruders would act towards her.
Sagebristle was more irritable than ever these days, but it manifested more as sullenness than her kithood tempers. There were far too many things on her mind. Growing up, it had been about proving herself. Now she had done that, earned the title, but she was contending with multiple emotions for the first time in a long time.
Confusion about what they were doing here, a desire to follow orders, a desire to refuse to commit the cruelties that seemed to be required of her. And Moonblight, always Moonblight, hovering in the back of her mind. When had he wiggled his way in there? It was part of the reason she'd asked to spend a few weeks in Summerclan instead of in her normal post beside Aspenstar. She thought the distance would lessen the pull towards her training partner, but it hadn't. Which pissed her off.
Then someone was tripping over her, and her hard amber eyes darted up to take in the offender. She was about to snap, say something cruel or disparaging, but the energy left her small frame and her shoulders sagged "Just watch out," she grumbled, turning away. "Some of the others would've had your tail over that."

Sunpaw wasn't usually the type to back off. She puffed out her cheeks, a witty retort about to leave her mouth, before remembering herself. Right. This cat wasn't from SummerClan. A shudder ran down her spine at the memory of her adopted father, being pummeled by that same cat who had threatened her and Foxpaw...she closed her eyes, shaking her head, trying to push that fear from her mind. Right. No fighting. Still, she couldn't keep the bitterness from pouring out of her mouth.
"Yeah," she glanced down immediately, her eyes darting around, "wouldn't want to get murdered before I become a warrior, I guess but thanks I guess. For not ripping my tail off."
"Are you not already a warrior?" Sagebristle asked, turning back to glance over the cat. "You must be the same age as me, right? What's the hold-up? Or are you training to be one of those dirt-diggers they keep around here?" The russet tabby had scoffed at the rank of garden keeper as soon as she'd heard what they did.
Who needed flower-planting hippies? Clearly it hadn't helped them any when Nightclan had invaded.

She frowned. What was any of that supposed to mean? Dirt diggers? Why did NightClan cats always sound so rude? Sunpaw scowled. "I think I was about to be a warrior right before this," she grumbled. Before you guys stepped in were the unspoken words. The apprentice looked rather miserable too at the whole change of plans; her life had been so simple before all of this.
"Well just ask and I'm sure Stormstar will promote you," Sagebristle said, feeling herself rise to the challenge of the apprentice's scowl. "He's already planning on it for the deputy's kids. The clan still needs warriors, so quit moping about like this is the end of your warrior career. You're fine."

She frowned. Were NightClan cats all so glib about this? So unaware of exactly what they were partaking in? "Yeah, like that'll be the same," she mumbled, "if you were given your warrior name by Ratstar instead of Aspenstar would you have felt like it was the same thing? Or if someone else invaded your clan and told you what you could do and what you couldn't do?"
Sagebristle grimaced, aware that Sunpaw had a point and also aware that she hated to be wronged. "Well your leader was incapacitated before we got here, so you wouldn't have even gotten your warrior name from him anyway. You had no leader, no deputy, and you really think you're better off like that?"

Sagebristle's words seemed to have stumped Sunpaw. "He would've gotten better," she mumbled, looking rather dejected, "and you guys don't even like SummerClan anyway...I mean, you're calling us dirt diggers...so why would you think that Stormstar would do a better job than Ratstar, if you guys don't even respect us?"
"Don't get it mixed up," Sagebristle said nonchalantly. "It's not Nightclan who dislikes you, it's me. And I have my own reasons beyond you all being a bunch of flower-weaving weenies. Stormstar is trying to treat you right... I think." The last addition was accompanied by a shrug. "All we're doing is making you switch sleeping schedules. Why is that so bad?"

Sunpaw tilted her head, her brow furrowing in confusion. "What did I ever do to you?" she asked out loud. She had no idea how to deal with this cat; she was just so...grumpy? Weird? At the other comment, she couldn't help but laugh. "Change sleep schedules?" she looked at Sagebristle with wide eyes. "Is that really the only thing you think you're doing...?"
She shook her head. "Even if it is..." she blinked, before turning to Sagebristle, "you've always worked at night...have you never seen the world during the day?"
At the first question, Sagebristle deflated a little, shaking her head. "Don't take it personally, kid," she told the cat who was her own age. At the mention of what Nightclan was doing, she shrugged, moving right past that to the next question.
"Sure I have. I grew up in the city and I wasn't nocturnal then. I've just gotten used to the night since I joined Nightclan and it's not nearly as bad as everyone here acts like it is."

Her eyes widened in intrigue. "You weren't born with the clans?" she asked curiously, surprised to hear that from a NightClan cat, "I...I didn't think NightClan would be open to newcomers, you know? I mean...I wasn't born in SummerClan either I guess, so who am I to say?"
"Hmph," Sagebristle said, brushing it off. "Plenty of us weren't. My training partner was born outside the clans, and my foster m-" She shook her head, a dart of pain lancing through her chest at the memory of Rosethorn and Foxpaw. "Whatever. Like I said, it's not uncommon."
After a heartbeat of silence, she opened her mouth, clearing her throat. "Why choose Summerclan, if you weren't born here?"

Sunpaw nodded in thought. It seemed like there were plenty of others like her, but she had never felt that way. Most of the Summerclan apprentices could swim; they fit right in, and she had always felt a little bit of a stranger. It wasn't a bad thing necessarily, but it did feel a bit weird at times.
At the next question, she seemed almost confused. Her frown was evident on her face. "I didn't choose to stay here, but...well, my papa was always travelling and my brother and I were kits you know? But I got really sick one day and they couldn't really bring me along, so Howlingheart adopted me, you know? I guess it just happened, and well, SummerClan's really nice. Everyone's nice." Unlike some of the other clans, she was about to say, but she kept her mouth shut.
"Sounds familiar," Sagebristle muttered absently, though she supposed everyone had some kind of story like that. Too many cats in these clans grew up abandoned or under foster parents who also abandoned them. "Well, enjoy your nice weakling friends," she quipped, walking off with a wave of her tail and effectively ending the conversation.
It wasn't until a week or so later that the two stumbled into each other again. Some of Sagebristle's pain had been lessened by then- she'd spoken to her foster brother, Foxpaw, and made amends. Even if she wasn't sure where she stood with Moonblight, at least that relationship had been restored.
She had spent the last thirty minutes chatting with Foxpaw by the fresh-kill pile, even exchanging a smile or two, unaware that Sunpaw had seen them and unaware that Foxpaw meant anything at all to the gossipy apprentice. When she nosed Foxpaw on the shoulder as a goodbye gesture and trotted off, she headed in Sunpaw's direction. When she saw her watching, Sagebristle stopped. "Whatcha looking at?" She grumbled, but the tone was noticeably less moody than last time.

Sunpaw didn't quite know why, but she felt a surprising sense of kinship with Foxpaw. There was something about the young apprentice that just reminded her so much of her brother, and reminded her of how much she wanted to protect her clanmates. As much as she had realized that Sagebristle wasn't exactly...evil...just grumpy and mean, she didn't trust this she-cat to not hurt her clanmates.
Then again, they must've been clanmates once too, right? She wondered if they had known each other, had anything in common. How strange it must be, to know your colonizers as family and friends once.
When Sagebristle grumbled at her, Sunpaw's immediate reaction was defensiveness and fury. "I thought you had a boyfriend," she scowled, moodier than she would be had it been any other cat, "wouldn't he be a bit sad if you're messing around with other SummerClan apprentices?"
Sagebristle's eyebrows lifted more out of curiosity than anger. Why did little miss sunny princess over here care? Why was she so snippy about her talking to-
Oh. Oh. Oh. Sunpaw thought- Sagebristle and Foxpaw- gross. And the only reason she cared was that she must be jealous. As absolutely disgusting as the thought of pretending to be interested in her favorite twink brother was, the ability to bait this little brat was irresistible.
"I told you, I don't have a boyfriend," Sagebristle said, with a casual shrug of her shoulders and a wide, dirt-eating smile. "So I can do whatever I want. Why do you care? Are you sad that he's interested in me? You'll have to get it over it, you know. He and I are meant to b- blech, sorry, I cannot finish that sentence. Starclan above, me and Foxpaw?" Sagebristle burst into laughter at the notion. "You better be nicer to me if you want me to put in a good word for you with my brother, you know."

She rolled her eyes. Their little patrol had talked all about Sagebristle's little...boyfriend, what was his name again? Moon...Moon....boy? Sunpaw had no idea, only that whoever had to deal with this stuck-up loyal guard must have been whipped. "Yeah yeah," she looked unimpressed, her tail lashing and her paw tapping on the ground, as she continued some drawl about Foxpaw being in love with her, when...?
"Brother?" she echoed, looking at Sagebristle with a frown. They didn't look alike, at least not to Sunpaw. "If you're his brother, then that means you were originally a SummerClan cat...you really left your family to stay with your boyfriend?" She seemed confused as to why anyone would do that, unaware that Rosethorn had also done the same when she had moved to NightClan.
Sagebristle exhaled through her teeth, which were now visibly gritted at the implication that she had ever been the one to leave family behind. But of course these cats would see her as the villain, never the victim. "Seeing as you didn't come out of Howlingheart's ball sack, you should know that there's more than just biological family out there, you dolt," she snapped, tail lashing behind her.
"I was not born in Summerclan- I've never even been here before. I've never left any of my family behind. If you want to know who left who behind, ask Foxpaw." Quite done with this conversation, she marched off, heading for the fresh kill pile to find something to sink her teeth into.
