Littlestar stared into the eternal flame, before turning back to her adoptive mother and mentor "Are you sure?"
Not many cats were allowed to enter into the depths of the Janus camp, however she had made an exception for Foxbane. The she-cat was a former High Priestess, but since she had stepped down had been bared from entering into the temple of the sun. Her memories of it's very existence slowly fading with time. What they were about to do was dangerous even with them temple to flee to, but Foxbane would have no such protections. There were dangerous creatures that roamed the astral plane and even more dangerous was the plane itself.
"Once we enter, there is only one way to return to your body and your physical body will be helpless without you to inhabit it" luckily they had come to one of the most protected areas in SunClan to enter into the plane, the temple. All the needed to do now was sleep on the sandstone steps and follow the light. Littlestar had practiced until she could do so from almost anywhere, but starting here always gave a bit more security. Honeystorm
"If I was afraid of death, I'd have disappeared from the clans a long time ago. I live with a target on my back, and if I let that stop me, then nothing would ever get done." Foxbane answered. "If someone is so intent on killing me they manage to do so here and now, well, they better hope they take all my lives, and don't leave a trace to be found."
Since Glowstar's proposal, the fox furred feline seemed more certain of herself in some ways. Like she had a direction and the sense to see it through. Less of this inner tumult of wondering whether she had made up for her past enough. She couldn't dwell on the past, and instead needed to move forward. To prove she was worthy of what her mate saw in her. It was a different motivator than revenge, less fiery, but constant and comforting in a way that her anger never had been.

“I’m afraid death would be one of the more kinder ends you could meet here” she replied softly, but there would be no deterring Foxbane now “I shall meet you on the other side” with that she curled up beside of the eternal flame, it’s tendrils almost licking her long fur. Her eyes closed, her breathing slowed until the darkness of sleep took hold.
Opening her eyes, littlestar gazed upon the door for the temple of stone. Ornately carved with images of lions, tigers, and a sun. The door normally would open for her, but with Foxbane here it remained firmly shut. Littlestar traced her paw over the image of the spiraling sun until she came to the middle. She murdered softly, a string of words that even Foxbane would have trouble hearing, before wincing. When she pulled her paw away, blood trickled from her pad. A line forming between her and the sun, bright red connecting the two of them “a simple assurance”
Foxbane didn't hesitate to curl up at Littlestar's side, not seeming to fear whatever was to come. When she awoke, there was this distinct feeling of having been there before, of understanding this was important, but not knowing what lay beyond the door. It was like the answers to these feelings had disappeared some time before now, and where they were meant to be was just emptiness, or hazy something that slipped like sand between her toes if she attempted to grasp at them. Internally, it made her suspicious. She knew she'd been here before, but she couldn't remember anything beyond that, though she was certain she should have more memories of this. Where had they gone? She didn't know, but since it had to do with SunClan... she could only assume Bravewolf would be able to tell her. But that was for future Foxbane. Currently, she had something else to attend to, and dwelling on this strange feeling wouldn't help her any.
She almost missed Littlestar's injuring herself, and the tether, then blinked with slightly narrowed eyes. Okay, presuming that was to help them, it made sense, but she didn't like it. "Hopefully it doesn't lead something to us as much as it guides us."

"A necessary risk" she replied honestly, the thought of the tether leading something to them was terrifying, but leaving left to wander the endless plane for all eternity was was far worse. She would take her chances with the monster and demons. Instead of going through the door, she turned away staring out into the misty darkness around them "I have wandered this plane for many a nights, it isn't safe to venture out without it" the tether ensured that they would be able to find their way back to their bodies, a lead for them to follow when they lost their way. She only hoped that she could remember where this realm was, the realm in which all of the souls were being kept "You might not remember this... everything has a cost"
Bounding ahead, Littlestar led the way to a narrowing path. Darkness looming on either side, bubbles floating up from the abyss and disappearing up above
"The cost is higher if you simply accept it instead of bargain." Foxbane answered, "Most things can be mitigated if you're clever enough."
Even still, she followed Littlestar, keeping her mouth shut about the obvious ask of if she'd been wandering here without the tether, and if she had been, she'd clearly made it back. The ivy eyed feline didn't like listening to others, and it showed. She had to actively work to restrain herself from taking the lead into an unknown she actually had no clue about, and instead trust that her daughter knew what she was doing well enough to let her lead them. Not in the ex-Priestess' nature at all, but somehow, she managed to do it. At least for the moment, following the she-cat to the narrowing path and the looming darkness.

"Do you know what these are?" she asked, looking over shoulder with a lop sided smile at Foxbane. It wasn't often that she knew something that her adoptive mother did not and even though it was a little childish, she couldn't help but feel a little satisfaction in it. She turned back around, staring with wide eyes at the bubbles around them "I didn't know until recently..." The bubbles looked clear at first glances, but looking closer each bubble contained a different scene. Different cats engaging in a wide variety of different activities and scenery
Foxbane didn't know, but she turned her head to stare at the bubbles she hadn't paid much mind to before, studying them. There were too many to watch, and she suspected that if she were to try, she would be sitting here for all an eternity and more before she was done. "Are they memories?"

"Close", she stood up on her backlegs, catching one of the bubbles and pulling it downwards "Dreams..." inside the bubble was he son Lionpride. He was rolling through the long grass with Pollendrone with the biggest grin she had ever seen on his face "When I was captured, this is how I was able to communicate with Skipstep" she released the bubble watching it gently float into the air above their heads "it can be tricky though, as you can see Finding the right dream in the sea of dreams"at least that is what she called this place. "The only reason I could find his with ease, was our mate bond from when we tied the knot...."she looked up at Foxbane with a glint in her eyes. Would her mother finally come forward with the truth? That she and Glowstar would soon be married themselves
Ah, close. Honestly, that explanation seemed far more sensible, given the situation they were currently in. She briefly watched Lionpride's dream, a smile crossing her features at his happiness, even if it was just a dream. Lifting her head, Foxbane could feel Littlestar's stare in the pause after mentioning SunClan's wedding ceremony. Well, that was about as subtle as a volcanic eruption. But even still, the she-cat played it as if she didn't absolutely understand what the Priestess was going for. "I suppose that is a perk. I wonder just how far that bond goes, sometimes. It's not something I've ever seen before SunClan."

"It not something you can easily explain to one who hasn't experienced it... Your souls are tied together, even after death. Sometimes it is difficult to tell where mine stops and Skipstep's begins" she paused, letting out a little sigh "When I hurt, her hurts. When I'm happy, he's happy. Haven't you ever thought about settling down with someone? You have been a mother plenty of times, but you never seem to stick with the same mate for to long" she teased, trying to pry the truth from her mother's lips
"Glowstar and I have been going steady for a while enough now, despite Funk being gone." Foxbane answered intentionally vaguely, now curious as to how far Littlestar would push to get her to answer. It wasn't that Fox couldn't, and she suspected her daughter already knew, based on her words. The trio of herself, Glowstar, and Funk had had an engagement before, but Foxbane hadn't ever said anything about how the relationship was going since Funk's disappearance. Of course, Foxbane had been spending a lot of time in DayClan lately, so one would assume it was going well. "But you keep prodding, what makes you think something's changed?"

"Why don't you tell me?" she smirked, the mischievous glint in her eyes never fading "Or rather why didn't you tell me first?"
She let her mother fill in the blanks, not leaving the subject nor backing down. It was clear to both of them that she knew, the only question was why hadn't she heard it from her mother's lips "Having seconds thoughts?" Littlestar was blocking the only path forward, as she waited patiently on Foxbane's answers "Or perhaps you are to ashamed of Glowstar to tell me the truth?"
"When did you get so blunt?" Foxbane mused, though there was a smile written across her features, one that was far too happy to align with Littlestar's accusations of how she might feel about Glowstar. "I'd say I liked the obedient kit you used to be more, but you seem so much more yourself when you're stubborn, I wish I'd been open to it sooner."
That didn't answer the question though. "But you're pretty off base, there. No, I'm not ashamed of our engagement. If I was, I wouldn't have proposed back then with Funk and Glowstar moons ago, and you saw those feathers. I should have told you sooner, but I've been more focused on DayClan, and trying to build up how they think of me, and spending time with Glowstar. I will never be good, and I'm not trying to be, but I do want to be someone she's proud of, so that I can lead DayClan at her side and not destroy the hard work she's put in. And instead, I ended up neglecting to make sure you knew. I'm sorry."

"You didn't neglect, you refused to tell me the truth" Littlestar replied with a smirk, glad to finally hear it from Foxbane herself
She spun around to continue on their journey "If you are going to apologize, don't you think you should at least apologize for the right offence?" she continued along the path as it slowly began to widen though now the silver queen was beginning to limp slightly "Of course I knew you would never be ashamed of Glowstar, but sometimes the only way to get you to answer truthfully is to poke you into anger" the bubbles slowly began to fade away as they wandered in the darkness up ahead, a bright light shining in the distance "If you hadn't given in, there was a few more buttons left for me to push" but her voice grew quite at the bright light "That's an entrance to StarClan, but that is not our destination"
"Right now, yes, I suppose you're right." Foxbane answered. Sometimes she did still see Littlestar as the little kit who had to be saved from WinterClan. But it was times like these where she could see how much the she-cat had grown, even since her previous leadership to this one, if one counted Bloodystar as a legitimate leader, anyway. "You must have a lot of faith in me now, that I wouldn't do anything too rash, if you're willing to try and anger me for a response. Or maybe just misplaced bravery."
She quieted a bit at the light, nodding slightly. She'd follow Littlestar wherever their destination was. Though seeing this was certainly interesting enough as it was. Much to learn today.

"You would never hurt me" she replied turning to Foxbane "You may have frightened me once, but you have proven that over and over again. When it really counts, you would see the world burn first"
The darkness continued on, as the passed many realms and afterlives. Some Littlestar had explored and some she had not. The longer they treked the less talkative the leader was becoming. Her form becoming less solid and more opaque, the tether remaining as solid and bright as ever "We are almost there" up ahead was a thick mist covered valley. It was eerily quite, with only the sound of their own breathing to be heard "That is where they are being kept" but as Foxbane moved forward, Littlestar stepped into her mother's path "We can go no farther. We must not touch the mist"
"You aren't wrong. I would burn the world if it would make you smile." She answered fondly, letting them fall to silence as they went on. At first, she didn't notice Littlestar's fading form, until she stopped, and Foxbane felt her fur rise. "Why can't we?" Of course, she remembered when they'd rescued Littlestar. There had been mist like this then... and if it was the same, then it was dangerous to simply walk in with reckless abandon.

“This is…it’s… lair” she still didn’t know what to call this entity “In there, there is nearly no limits to what it can do to you. This mist, it absorbs life. Taking it from you until there is nothing left. It’s excruciating…it’s…” she hadn’t realized it until then but she had started to tremble. Even with Foxbane standing there at her side, she was afraid. The torment she had went through, still fresh in her mind. The scars it had left behind still visible through her long coat “It takes everything that you are piece by piece…. Until all that is left is an empty shell of whom you once were”
Foxbane reached out gently to touch Littlestar, her voice soft. "You're safe with me, Littlestar. Like you said, I'd burn the world before I'd hurt you, and I'd do the same to any arrogant thing that thinks it can force you to live in fear." She didn't need to say she'd give her life to protect the Priestess for her to know, though whether that would be a comfort, who knew. "If we can't enter, is this the end of the road, and time to turn back? Or is there more to see. If we're thinking of a plan. Planning here, now, seems unwise."
