It was done... Brindlemist was gone and buried . All that was left of her was the three small bundles of fur that had yet to even open their eyes. Roseshade had been a mess since her death, but the one thing that was for sure was that she made sure the kits had wanted for nothing. Arranging for a queen to nurse them, making their nest herself, checking on them hourly, and giving them as much attention as she could spare. She was constantly going back and forth between her own den and the nursery
Garsparkling didn't leave the camp anymore. After the funeral, he couldn't bear to go visit her grave, or go on any of his patrols; the clan allows him to treat into his grief and he spent day after day curled up behind the nursery, restlessly watching for any predators or enemies that might come near, feeling so empty and helpless that he couldn't protect his own mate. He checked on his kits occasionally, but they were too young to play with, and the queens didn't like his hovering, so he remained outcast to the fringes of the camp, barely eating, barely sleeping. It wasn't sustainable, but she had only just died, and he didn't think a week of silence was too much to ask.
So when the witch came near, he bit his lip, staring at her. "Fine," he acknowledged finally, "come on." The yellow-and-gray tom stepped into his worn spot behind the nursery and waited.

Roseshade joined him, taking her place behind the nursery where spying eyes and over curious ears were less likely to hear. She to had been a mess since Brindlemist had passed. Plagued with night terrors, her fur matted, eyes red from tears. She had never even spoken to her sister's mate alone before this, only when the two of them had come in to have the progress of the kits checked. She had her paws full between her duties as the clan's witch, learning to heal, and trying to keep Robinring at bay
"My sister...when she..." she swallowed hard trying to find the right words to say. Words that wouldn't hurt him, when he had already been hurt so deeply with her death "when we spoke the last time, she asked me to help you with the kits. To be there for them, since she could not... She hoped that one day they would think of me as a motherly figure, the same way our mother took us in as her own" she paused knowing that it was going to be a lot of Garsparkling to take in
"But I can't do that... not without your blessing. She may have been their mother, but you are their father. In the coming moons you will have many choices that you will have to make for their future. You know as well as I that in WinterClan, your status is everything. Your status was boosted because you became mates with my sister, but I'm afraid now that she is gone you will not have as much say over what happens to them in the future as you would like..."
Roseshade looked down at the ground "I will never be able to replace Brindlemist... No one ever will. However, what I can do is lend my own good fortune with them. I am high enough in the caste system, that should I help take over some of their care I should be able to help get them into a good match for marriage when the time comes. My hope being that they will be able to marry for love" she took in a deep breath "I will never be able to replace their mother, but I hope that you will allow me to be there for them as their aunt. To give them the best start in life that we can, and to work together to make their future's bright"
He chewed on that in silence. Garsparkling was not even sure he liked kits, not without their mother around; he had been happy enough to start a family with Brindlemist, but without her, he didn't see the point. At the same time, thinking of Roseshade raising them instead of him... it filled him with fierce anger, like a switch that went off, energy flooding back through his veins for the first time in days. This was his family to look after, nobody else's.
She had a point, though. What did he know about raising kittens? He had no idea what to do with them, they needed a mother, and he was a lower status than his sister-in-law.
"I am their father," he told her stubbornly, close-set orange eyes glaring at her stubbornly. "And their mother is dead. You can't take her place, nobody can, and they're my kits, not yours." His tail switched back and forth over the ground as he allowed, "but... I guess you can help. Just a little. You are her sister... and Robinring was her best friend, she... she would have wanted that..."
His rage died in an instant, his voice quivering at the end as he fought back tears.
