Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
News traveled, even to the secluded ones. Pygmyprawn had not expected for her son to show up. She definitely did not expect the news she was given. A prickle of frustration and something else...fear perhaps, though she would never admit it, upset her stomach. "Doestar is alive."
The petite, sunken-eyed cat sat for a long time after Caverncrystal left, letting this thought swirl around her thoughts and create smaller, more troublesome ideas in the process. She had no doubt that Chim already knew, or would know soon. It wasn't until after Doestar's death that he confessed feelings for her. The love he had given her she doubted for a long while after he had proposed because a part of her felt that things would be different if he didn't die. She had come to trust that Chim did truly love her, but was it enough? For her, it was, but she never expected Doestar to...return. It was like a crack in the glass house she had built in their time together the past several moons. Her trust had been so fragile, and yet she never noticed until now.
A part of her felt guilt that she doubted his loyalty to her. She didn't own him and Pygmyprawn had made that vow to herself a long time ago, before he proposed, that she would never try and tie him to her. Her hope had always been that he have the happiest life and experience real joy. Why was it suddenly so different now? She was angry at herself and her weakness. Even more so, she was furious at the tears that began to stream from her eyes and patter onto the den floor. If he saw her now, he would surely leave. It was never like her to cry so easily.
(had to cut it off early because my bath was almost overflowing oops, sorry for typos and bad grammar)
Chim had spent most of the morning curled up on the bank of the river, watching the water rush by until he had fallen asleep. It was becoming a common occurrence for the fisher; the quiet water sounds, the patient waiting required to catch his meal, and the soft heat lulled him to sleep most days, especially when his belly was already comfortably full. Today he returned earlier than usual, with a strange solemn look on his face, not unlike his usual peaceful-yet-grumpy expression, and his brow only furrowed further when he saw the tears running down her cheeks.
He was tempted to turn back now... but if she was upset now, he knew why. The timing was too much of a coincidence.
So he padded silently to her side and sat down beside her, curling his tail neatly over his paws. They had built a good life here, a steady one, a life he had only ever dreamed of: quiet mornings alone, a prison den of their own to look after, far from other cats, and evenings to spend together watching the stars. He could have lived the rest of his life here without a hint of regret, but now... he couldn't just forget what he'd learned, could he?
"I had a dream," he meowed quietly, finally breaking the silence between them. "I suspect you had the same one." He didn't look over at her yet, watching the empty landscape ahead of them. "What are you thinking?"

The initial shock of being caught in the act of crying stunned Pygmyprawn. She hadn't expected him to return so soon. The lump in her throat stung as he confirmed what she wondered. "Mm." She couldn't manage to answer more than that for several long moments. All she could do was stare at their den wall. "I-- I don't know what to think." Her voice sounded raw and bitter as she finally spoke up, which made her own heart ache more. "What cat just pops up from the dead?" As usual, she couldn't stop the words that tumbled from her mouth. Her temper always had a way of beating her brain. "It's--" She almost said it, but thank goodness she got ahold of herself before that hurt, angry, confused phrase left her mouth. It's not fair.
No, what wasn't fair was for him to lose the love that he cherished so soon. It wasn't fair for her to grasp on to him so tightly when he wasn't hers to begin with.
A ragged sigh shook her little body and she finally tore her gaze away from the stone around them and looked over at the cat she had loved and supported for so long. "Chim..." Tears stung at her eyes but she quickly blinked them away. Squaring her shoulders, she tried again, "Chim, I don't want-- I won't make you stay if you want to see him." Her eyes fell once more to the stone. "And if you discover that you still...love him, then you know what I want you do to. I have always wanted your happiness, my love." She was lying, somewhat, and it irritated her. Her own body and soul longed to keep him close and hide him away where Doestar would never steal him. She didn't want to go back to before where several times the pain of seeing them together threatened to drown her. It was a suffocating life to live. But, she also knew she would do it all over again, and again, and again, just to see Chim happy. No matter his choice, she knew she would always be by his side. So why couldn't she be fine with just that?
"Back from the dead," he mumbled, unconvinced, "or else his grave is empty."
If Doefreckle was alive, he had likely never died; it hurt to think he had left Chim behind, but he couldn't afford to focus on that agony now. Not when Pygmyprawn was suffering right next to him. He didn't know what to say; he wasn't very good with emotions and neither was she. How were they supposed to handle this? How could he keep her happy when his heart urged him to go and see if these rumors were true? How could he tell her that and watch her break? (What if he left and it was all a lie, and Doefreckle was still gone?)
He looked back at her with a little frown. His desperate prayer that StarClan descend and speak for him went unanswered, so he took a deep breath and started to choose his words very carefully.
"I want to go see him," Chim confessed, "just to know that he really is alive, to know why he left. I don't know what I'll think when I see him." That was a scary thought. Taking a deep breath, he reached out and placed his paw over hers. "Hey. I chose you." That had to mean something, right? (Was he trying to convince her or himself?)

At his gesture, she felt her stomach twist. Of course she knew that. Making herself believe that he would have chosen her if Doefreckle had not died was the difficult part. She swallowed the pain in her chest and nodded. "You know I will not stop you." Her gaze watched an ant trail along the edge of her paw absently. Words couldn't describe the many emotions that stormed inside her. Selfishly, she wanted it to all be a dream and for them to wake up back in their normal, peaceful routine. She finally tore her gaze back up to him and gave a soft smile, which was not a common expression for her. "Chim, I love you." Please don't leave me. "I will always be grateful and, honestly confused, that you chose to be with me. Thank you for loving me." Why did this feel like her saying goodbye? Perhaps it was the walls she was trying to slam back up. He hadn't even made his decision, or even knew for sure that Doefreckle was alive and she was already shutting herself back in that little turtle shell. She let out a sigh and pressed her head underneath his chin. For a moment, she simply closed her eyes and took a deep breath in, relishing the feeling of him close to her and his scent filling her senses. In that moment, he was there with her. If this were to end, at least she could have this feeling burned into her memories.
It was several long moments before she moved back to look at him. "When will you go? We should probably pack some food in case you get lost." She quipped, jabbing him in the side with one tiny, mottled paw.
He knew. He knew she would let him break her heart over and over again, and she wouldn't say a word about it. It felt so wrong to have that power over her, even more so to abuse it and hurt her. A part of him wished she would disagree, would fight to keep him at her side or yell at him for even considering to leave, but she never did, she just put up those walls again, and the guilt he felt was worse than any argument. This wasn't fair to her, but he was doing it anyway.
"I love you," he murmured back. "I won't be gone long." It had taken him a long time to say those words, but he still believed them. Chim loved Pygmyprawn in a very different way than Doefreckle, though it was difficult to describe how. Both feelings ran deep through him, both cats tugged at his heartstrings and made him think irrationally, but while he longed for the former leader, his best friend had always been comfortable and secure at his side. They were different spaces in his life, different loves, but he had to give one up. And it wasn't a hard choice, not really, not when he had the perfect life set up for him here. Even if it hurt, this was the smartest choice.
Chim chucked at the thought of carrying around mouthfuls of prey, but she was right. "I'll leave tomorrow morning, at dawn. Maybe on the way back I'll stop by SwiftClan, if I can find them, and make sure everyone is surviving." After a brief moment of consideration: "maybe not everyone. Is it cruel to hope that most of them have died and won't bother me anymore?"
