Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Larkspur steps into the middle of camp, the deputy standing tall and proud despite her small stature. She was waiting for her apprentices to tumble in, knowing they would soon. She was excited, though nervous. She hadn't been given her own apprentice training group yet, she mostly just circulated through helping the other mentors with the apprentices they had already. But now with the new influx of new apprentices, she had been given the responsibility of teaching part of the next generation.
She sighs softly. This was their first lesson, so she knew that they may not know the importance of time management quite yet. But that was something that the pair would need to develop if they were to become well rounded warriors. Responsibility was just as important as hunting or fighting. The sooner that the apprentice duo learned the better.
"Moonpaw, Sagepaw, we don't have all night." She calls, a hint of amusement and teasing behind her words. The learning would come with time.
Sagepaw had meant to be on time, and she was kicking herself now for failing to be. She would've been on time, had she not gotten into a rather vicious argument with Jackdawpaw- mostly one sided, with her thinking of as many creative insults for him as she could.
But at least she was the first to arrive. That meant she was already doing better than Moonpaw.
"I'm here," the small russet tabby said, appearing before Larkspur. She wasn't one for apologies. "Guess we just gotta wait for Moonboy now, right? He's slowing us down as usual."
Sagepaw's amber eyes flashed with a bright anticipation. She had been waiting for Aspenstar's permission to begin training ever since she'd arrived in Nightclan- but she was not permitted to train until she'd gained some more weight. The deputy knew as well as every older cat how she'd arrived just a moon or two prior- dragged in by Phantomfox as a howling scrap of fur, with prominent ribs and hollow cheeks. She would've liked to train under Phantomfox- she'd seen how easily he'd snapped Pinesimmer's legs- but a deputy was just as good, as she intended to be top of her class.

"Don't get your paws in a twist, I'm here," Moonpaw yawned, standing right behind their mentor, having entered the clearing at the same time Sagepaw had. Of course, the other cat was already trying to put in a bad word with their mentor about him. He rolled his eyes; whatever, Sagepaw was always like this, and frankly, he couldn't care less about her. She could stay grumpy and friendless for all he cared, he was just here to learn.
"What are we learning today?" he chirped brightly, ignoring the apprentice for his mentor instead, a grin on his face, "will we start hunting first? Or fighting? Or...I dunno, explore the territory?"
Larkspur's face shows no emotion once the two apprentices arrived, the look in her eyes neutral and unwavering. It might be unsettling to some, but her apprentices would have to get used to it. Though Larkspur cared and loved others, she rarely let her face betray her emotions, knowing that was admitting weakness to an enemy. "First, we're going to go over my rules and expectations for you two." She sits, instructing the two young apprentices to do the same.
"First," she states, allowing her gaze to linger on both cats for an equal amount of time. "I will not tolerate genuine fighting, or harm done to each other while I am your mentor. The reason we work in pairs is because teamwork is what keeps our clan cohesive. To become top of your class, you will need to learn to work together properly. Gentle teasing is okay. I encourage friendly competition, but anything out of spite will land you on elder's duty for a moon."
"Second," she continues, "I will treat you with the same respect you give me. I am more than happy to be your mentor and someone you can come to with problems you might have. However, I will not tolerate disrespect to me, Phantomfox, or Aspenstar. If I hear you have disrespected any of our warriors, I will also be quite unhappy."
"Third, this is a learning environment. Please ask me questions so you can learn. No question should go left unsaid." Finally, she smiles. "Okay. Now we can start. We will be travelling the territory today. Any questions so far?"
Sagepaw sat reluctantly, her feet buzzing with energy and a desire to get moving. Who cared about rules and guidelines and respect? And only gentle teasing was allowed? Bah, what a buzzkill. The russet tabby blinked, looking between Moonpaw and Larkspur. "Sounds good to me," she agreed readily, if only to get to the actual exciting part.
"My first question is when do we start fighting? And what are we looking at first today? I always wanted to see the waterfall." Sagepaw, normally either taciturn or frothing at the mouth, actually seemed excited to train. It was the one thing she'd set her heart on since joining Nightclan, and she meant to make the most of it.

Moonpaw nodded at Larkspur's words; after all, he wasn't the one starting all the fights. Sagepaw was the one constantly being a pain in the...well, he better leave that unsaid. It'd be easy enough; he had gotten pretty used to tuning out whatever the grumpy cat next to him had to say. "That sounds good to me!" he replied with a grin.
Sagepaw certainly had all the questions he also wanted to ask. "Will we get to see the borders?" he asked, "which clans are near us? Do we have to train to fight because they might attack us?"
Larkspur chuckles softly at the questions her apprentices threw so quickly to her, remembering how eager she had been to train when she'd first started. Her blue eyes gleam with pride. She knew these two would make amazing warriors and assets to the clan once they got some skills under their paws.
"Fighting will come soon. Today, we travel the territory, and tomorrow, we start with hunting." She flicks an ear back, expecting pushback, though she continues to speak on. "Hunting will get you further than fighting," she explains. "Lost in the woods, if you're unsure how to hunt, you're as good as dead. Scent tracking and stealth are skills you will learn from hunting that also come into play while fighting. So remember, the skills you learn now will help in your training down the line."
She hums softly with Moonpaw's question, tail tip twitching. She uses a claw to draw in the dirt. "We're here." She marks with a rock. "This way is Moonclan, and this way is Sunclan. Swiftclan is all the way over here. While Sunclan is a threat, Moonclan is moreso of one."

The young tom nodded along, trotting alongside his mentor as they continued to see the territory, his head turning at every new thing. There was just so much to see and smell; everything was so much fresher out here in the open than back in the camp. Hunting was pretty exciting too; he couldn't wait to catch his first mouse, just like how he'd watch his father bring back food for them whenever they were travelling.
As Larkspur began to explain the territory, Moonpaw nodded along, excited to learn about the different places around the forest. "Why is MoonClan more a threat?" he asked seriously, his eyes wide, "have you ever been in a battle on the border, Larkspur?"
Sagepaw, for once, was quiet, listening. She too wanted to know the answers to Moonpaw's questions, though she was eager to start with the fighting. Her small frame was more naturally built for hunting, but she needed some way to let out her pent-up anger and fighting seemed like the best outlet.
Her ears perked up at the question of battles, wanting to know if her mentor had ever proven her mettle in combat.
Larkspur looks between the two apprentices, wondering how much she could tell them. They were growing up here, so they would learn eventually. Starting early couldn't hurt, right?
Sighing softly, she offers a small smile. "Sunclan has always been one of our enemies. However, Littlestar seems to want to make peace with Aspenstar. This would be quite monumental. They don't believe in Starclan. Moonclan, however, isn't trying at all really. They don't believe in Starclan either, and they're run like a military."
Larkspur chuckles. "A few border skirmishes here and there. Nothing serious. The fighting has gone on around me in my lifetime more than in our borders. Dayclan battled quite recently, and as I'm aware, have had trouble since." The she-cat remembered how she was at their age, just as curious and eager to fight.

Moonpaw nodded in rapt attention. "Do you think they'll do anything more?" he asked tentatively, "would they ever start a war or something?" He still didn't know what StarClan really was, but he had only been in NightClan for a short while. He wanted to be prepared for anything that happened.
The mention of Starclan passed Sagepaw by. She knew her clan believed in the spirits that remained to watch over them and guide them, but she didn't believe it for a second. The living weren't ever there for anyone- why would the dead be? Still, she didn't find the subject worth broaching.
Sagepaw grinned. "Let them try," she said, holding her head high. "We'd beat them. We've got Aspenstar and Phantomfox and Larkspur, and me- once I'm done training," she added, as if that made the statement more humble.
The deputy cracks a grin, enjoying listening to the apprentices. "Well, Sagepaw, it is your first day. Don't trip head over paws." She gestures with her tail to move forward, so the trio could learn more about the territory. Eventually, they wound up at the waterfall.
"This is one of the most dangerous places in the territory. You MUST be careful when around the river at any point." She shudders, remembering the lives of cats lost, purposefully, and on accident. She knew Aspenstar had never been quite the same since she lost her brother from this waterfall.
Soon she'd shown the apprentices all the important points of the territory, and they had started to the hollow. While they wouldn't be training much today, she wanted to speak to them about the system and how they could succeed. "Moonpaw, Sagepaw." she gestures for them to make themselves comfortable. "Has anyone explained the apprentice system to you yet?"

Moonpaw nodded seriously as he glanced at the waterfall, suddenly feeling a little scared of heights. The rocks felt slippery; he could see why it could be dangerous, one misstep and surely he'd go tumbling down the falls and into the crashing waves below...he wasn't sure he could survive that.
Looking up as Larkspur spoke, he was momentarily distracted by the thought of death via waterfall. "Not really," he replied with a sheepish grin, "I'm not even sure what apprentices are supposed to do in the first place."
Sagepaw peered over at the waterfall, curious rather than fearful, wondering what it would feel like to make the plunge- but judging from the solemnity in Larkspur and Moonpaw's eyes, that wasn't a good thing to wonder aloud. She followed in the direction of the hollow, sitting down when their mentor told them to.
"We train to become warriors- together, I guess," Sagepaw said, glancing sideways at Moonpaw. "We learn to hunt and fight and for some reason clean the elder's den like servants, which somehow turns us into worthy warriors. Is that right?" The russet she-cat had been intrigued by the training process as soon as she'd decided to stay in Nightclan- because it was one rung on the ladder towards becoming a part of the Loyal Guard.
Larkspur holds in a snort of amusement at the young apprentices, and she flicks her tail in thought of how to explain. "There's three ranks you might be placed into when we have our apprentice Olympics. Top of class, mid-class, and lowest of class. You want to score into mid, or top. Apprentices may only be placed top of class together, so you must learn to work as a team. You may only become warriors together. If one of you is not ready, neither of you will be."
Larkspur's eyes narrow, and harden. She forces her gaze to soften, knowing Sagepaw hadn't been born in clan, and she'd been fostered. She takes a breath. "We show respect to our elders because they are the foundation of the clan. They fought long and hard to keep the clan healthy and thriving. In gratitude, we take care of them in their vulnerable days. Someday, when you become an elder, the clan will take care of you."

Moonpaw listened in rapt attention, nodding along, before giving Sagepaw a look. They had to work together? Surely she'd be less than willing to do so. He had engaged with Sagepaw's personality many times, and well, working together sounded like a good idea in words but in practice? He wasn't so sure it would be as easy.
"So when I'm an elder, will I get to boss everyone around?" he giggled, trying to break the tension of everyone around him.
