The red light of the setting sun cast long shadows throughout the forest. The silver-grey tabby slipped through the woods, his large paws silent and ears erect. Being one of the loyal guard, Wolfriot took his job very seriously. Part of looking after Aspenstar was also checking the territory for danger, and that was just what he was doing. He couldn't sit still at camp, sitting around outside her den or close to the pale furred she-cat while she was eating. He needed to be out here, guarding her territory from any danger.
Taking pause, Wolfriot stopped at a small steam and ducked his head to take a drink, the cool water washing over his pale muzzle. He caught sight of his reflection in the water, making eye contact with himself. "What are you looking at?" he grumbled with a sigh, turning away from the rippling image.

While all the other apprentices were back in camp, Moonpaw found himself out by the stream again. Days ago, Sagepaw had showed him the proper way to hold a hunting stance, and since then, he had found a certain fervor for training that hadn't been there before. Something about the other apprentice just made him want to do better. It boiled this sense of competition in his blood. So here he was, crouched in the underbush, waiting for a chance to grab that vole he was eyeing...
His crouch felt comfortable–something he was slowly getting used to–and suddenly, a powerful kick from his back legs launched him forward...though perhaps a little too far because he completely misjudged the leap, landing a little too forward, the vole now between his hind-legs, as he scrambled to grasp it, the tiny creature immediately dashing from the tom's paws as he stumbled, rolling into the silent clearing Wolfriot had enjoyed.
Looking up, he realized he was looking at another cat upside down. Did he interrupt something? "Oh sorry?" he spoke sheepishly, wide eyes blinking at the older cat.
Hearing the crashing, Wolfriot took a step back from the waters edge and watched the young apprentice tumble into the clearing, tail over paws. Holding back a chuckle, Wolfriot padded over to the young tom and offered a small smile.
"You doing okay down there?" The silver tabby fell to his belly to meet the apprentice's gaze, the smile half cocked on his maw.

Okay so that was embarrassing, Moonpaw thought as he blinked at the warrior, brain completely blank before he realised this wasn’t just any warrior, this was one of the loyal guards.
Scrambling up, his wide eyes stared at Wolfriot with both awe and admiration, as well as plenty of embarrassment for making himself a fool in front of anyone. “Yeah I’m fine!” he squeaked with an awkward laugh, glancing at the direction in which the vole scampered off to, “I uh....overestimated my jump I think. Guess I’m not really that great of a hunter.”
Letting out a low, rumbling laugh, Wolfriot gave a nod and a smile. "It took me a while to grow into my big paws, so I totally understand where you're coming from." Standing up and pulling his body into a stretch, the grey tabby shook his pelt and looked the apprentice over. "Who's your mentor?" he asked with a tip of his head.

Moonpaw stood up tall, a bright grin on his face and his chest puffed out. "Larkspur!" he announced proudly for a moment, before a sheepish look seemed to cross over his face, "but...don't tell her about how I totally failed that just now. I'd be so embarrassed."
His expression brightened, blinking at the older cat. "Wait, you said you had trouble too, right? Can you teach me how to hunt?"
Wolfriot gave a small purr, followed by a quick wink. "Don't worry, I won't tell her anything," he promised with a grin. At the young cat's next request, his smile grew. Training apprentice's had quickly become one of his favorite things to do after his first time with Puddlepaw. "Of course I could help you out," he said with a wave of his tail.

"Really?" his expression brightened considerably, as his ears immediately perked up, his eyes wide in anticipation, "that would be amazing! Where do we start?" His tail couldn't hold still, lashing excitedly as he gave the warrior a grin. To be trained by another warrior and to get even more help...surely that meant he'd at least be on equal standing with Sagepaw after today!
"Well first let's get to somewhere that's more cleared out so you're not tripping on anything," the large tom said, heaving himself onto his paws and giving a quick stretch. With a jerk of his head, he motioned for the apprentice to follow him towards the training area.

He nodded brightly. "Of course!" he trotted next to the older tom, "so how did you learn all your moves? Did you have a cool mentor too? Did he teach you any special moves? What's the coolest thing you ever did as an apprentice?"
"I had a good mentor," Wolfriot said with a small nod. "He's been dead for a few winters now and I miss him a lot. He grew up back at the old camp." Memoried of Coalbreeze flashed through his mind, heart warming as he thought of the former deputy. "I got into a lot of trouble as an apprentice though."

A sadness seemed to cross Moonpaw's face at the thought of another cat dying. "I'm sorry," he replied with a frown, though he didn't truly understand why he was apologizing. He had never lost anyone like that; all the cats he had lost had the chance of coming back, but death was something still entirely foreign to the apprentice. Perhaps that's why his ears perked up immediately at the next topic.
"What kind of trouble?" he brightened, eyes wide, "I heard one of the apprentices put a bunch of spiders around camp and caused an infestation! Did you do something crazy like that?"
Flicking his tail across the young cats ear, he appreciated the sorrow that was shared. At the mention of spiders, he let out a purr of a laugh. "No," he chuckled with a shake of his head, "nothing like that. Mainly sneaking out of camp and wandering across borders I shouldn't. Though I did trick another apprentice into eating rabbit dung and telling them it was special berries." Wolfriot gave a wicked grin then, his laughter growing.

A giggle left Moonpaw's mouth. "Oh gross," he snorted, grimacing at the thought of accidentally eating dung of all things, before giving the warrior a wicked grin, "maybe I should try that with my training partner." He gave Wolfriot a beaming grin before glancing towards the training hollow. It was pretty empty today, he thought.
Dropping down into the clearing, Wolfriot swept his gaze across the flat surface and gave a small nod. There was no once else around to distract them. Turning back to the apprentice, the grey tabby dropped into a crouch and narrowed his eyes. "Show me what you know," he said in a slight snarl, lip curling and tail lashing. There was determination in his honey gaze, along with a bit of amusement and excitement.

Moonpaw nodded brightly, before crouching down into his hunters crouch. It was better than the one he had a couple of days ago; back then he had been almost completely off balance, and the little help he got from Sagepaw had actually given him a better grip, but his paws were still large and clumsy in comparison; he had yet to grow into them and he felt a little awkward about the stance, and as he crept forward, it was clear that the tom was still heavy, finding it difficult to take the tiny, light steps that a hunter required.
Wolfriot let out a small purr of amusement, crouching down next to the young tom. "I'm going to tell you this right now, and I mean it in the best way possible, but you won't be your best until you've grown into those things." He nodded down to Moonpaw's large feet, lips curling into a smile. "But, the best way to do it while your paws are so big is to rock your weight. Go from toes to pads, keep your toes slightly spread. Might seem weird, but until your body grows into your feet it'll help you balance."

Moonpaw pouted at that. "Then I'll never be able to claim top of class!" he complained, ears dropping. He had to beat Sagepaw to this! At the next suggestion, his ears perked up immediately, as his brow furrowed, trying to visualize what Wolfriot was telling him. Rock his weight? Spreading out his paws and grounding his toes into the soil, he frowned. "–but wouldn't that make it hard for me to stay light on my paws?"
Dropping down next to the young feline, Wolfriot mimicked his pose. "When you take a step," he meowed, demonstrating, "rock your weight back onto your haunches, and when you go to pull your back leg forward, roll the weight back up to the front." With his size, this was how Wolfriot had always found it easiest to hunt. He crept along smoothly around the apprentice, barely making a crackle on the dead leaves under paw. "It takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's as smooth as water." He stopped and flashed Moonpaw a grin. "Rocking your weight onto the paw that's firmly on the ground helps keep you centered and helps with noise. If all your weight is in one spot, you won't disturb anything else."

Moonpaw watched, clearly impressed by the way the other tom stalked through the leaves without a sound, his eyes as wide as the moon for which he was named after. Immediately setting his gaze into a determined expression, putting one tentative paw out first, before shifting the weight from the back to the front, carefully moving his back paws to follow. His movements were still slow–he wanted to be as careful as possible–but there was a lot less noise, and it didn't look as clunky as it did moments before. His tail quivered in excitement as he turned to Wolfriot, barely holding back the grin that threatened to appear on his face.
