Being in separate factions in Primal Instinct meant that Hywel and Rhiannon often spent their days apart, but there were some nights when they were able to find time for one another. The moon was shining bright tonight, and Hywel found himself atop a dumpster bin, his gleaming blue eyes roaming the alleyway for any signs of life.
A light thump made him turn towards the sound. "Lazing about as usual?" the humour could be heard in Rhiannon's voice, even if her eyes didn't necessarily reflect the same amusement.
"You know what they say, work smarter, not harder," Hywel replied back, sitting upwards with a stretch and a yawn, tilting his head towards Rhiannon. "So, how has your little hunt been?" he asked, whiskers twitching into a smirk, "found your little philosopher's stone yet?"
The other cat rolled her eyes, running her tongue across her pelt. "Not yet," she admitted, "but...it's interesting. They say that the Nemesis himself has eight lives. Not sure if he's had to kill others for every one of his lives; apparently the gods around here are more gracious about it. They just give them away to the leaders of those little groups."
"How intriguing," Hywel spoke with a snort, "maybe we should've been born here rather than in Herne's forest. We wouldn't have had to run for our lives if that were true."
Rhiannon seemed unaware of another presence nearby, but the twitch of Hywel's ear said otherwise. He had sensed another in their midst, yet he had simply chosen to ignore it for the most part, until his eyes turned towards the street again. "You know, it's not polite to be creeping around in the dark like this, you know," he spoke in a deadpan.
"Apologies," Reynardine said quietly, her white pelt and split eyes melting out from the shadows. She knew these two vaguely, back from her home, but they were a year or so younger than her and they had never had overlapping groups of friends or family. The huntress wasn't even sure if they'd recognize her as anyone other than a fellow League member.
"Hywel and Rhiannon, is it?" She asked in her soft, almost melodic voice. "I'm Reynardine. I didn't mean to creep up on you, I just didn't want to interrupt anything important."

Rhiannon had moved first, leaping down from their perch to look towards the she-cat. Certainly, the cat knew them by name, but she couldn't remember ever meeting her. She wondered whether they had passed each other before, or perhaps, worked in the same department? "Reynardine," she tested the name on her tongue, her cold eyes still regarding the other warily, "internal affairs perhaps? Is that where we met? Am I going to be reprimanded by our nemesis for mingling? Or are you just passing by?"
Hywel sighed, following behind, dropping gracefully by the she-cat, giving Reynardine a look over. While Rhiannon had been too young to really remember what the north was like, he had been born years earlier, and while the other cat didn't exude a sense of being from the loch, there was a scent upon her, something akin to the grass and heathers in the highlands that reminded him of the place. He wasn't sure whether he was just dreaming about this or not.
"You know, if you wanted some directions to a good spot to eat, we'd happily give you a little tour; this trash dump isn't really great though." He was always more casual than Rhiannon ever was.
Rhiannon's wariness almost seemed to amuse Reynardine, and a faint smile pulled at her lips. "Foreign affairs," she said, glancing between the siblings. "So you'll have no trouble from me." It seemed the sister didn't recognize her, but the brother... she wasn't sure if any recognition registered in his mind.
"A tour sounds lovely." While she had been surprised when two younger loch cats had shown up where she'd taken up residence, she hadn't ever made a move to speak to them first. Even if she felt a vague kinship to them because of their shared birthplace, it wasn't really her style to be the initiator of things. But perhaps this was a chance to change things, to get to know these siblings.

It was Hywel who took the lead in both their walk and their conversation, sauntering forward as if there was no hurry to go anywhere other than here. "So Reynardine," he pondered casually, "sounds like a rather uncommon name...it's a bit of a mouthful actually. Mind if I call you Reyna?" There was this certain humour in Hywel's relaxed attitude that was often missing from Rhiannon's.
Rhiannon seemed to notice that her brother was...prying for something, yet she was uncertain why they were even entertaining this new character who had stepped into their conversation without so much as a greeting. There was something about the other cat that seemed...she couldn't describe it exactly, just that Reynardine's expression seemed like she knew too much, as if she could see right through them. It unnerved her.
"Reyna works fine," Reynardine said with a light shrug. It didn't matter what they referred to her as, as she wasn't a stickler for respect or formality. "Hywel and Rhiannon stick out too, among a group of Alexandria's and Eve's and Sparrow's. Shorter than mine, though, so I suppose a nickname isn't necessary."
As she spoke, she walked alongside Hywel, her eyes focused ahead, on the shadows of the alleyways and the hazy night sky visible as a strip above them.

Hywel chuckled. "I suppose," he replied, his mannerisms acted as if he was letting his guard down, but his eyes were still sharp as ever, "we're not from here, so common names back home are rather...different than the common names around this forest. Surely, I was a bit surprised to hear so many strange names while I passed through some of the territories."
Rhiannon sighed. Whatever her brother was doing, she was just going to go along with it. "We met quite a few...what were they called? Something-paws and other-pelts and...cats really liked naming themselves after the sacred trees, no?"
Hywel's lips were forming a thin smile. "Certainly nothing like Hywel, or Rhiannon, or even Reynardine, no? Speaking of, your name's more common up north, isn't it?" he gave Reyna another look over; he was almost certain the sense of familiarity wasn't just misguided senses. "–common name from the loch, no?"
Reynardine's smile grew slightly as Hywel looked her over once more. He was more perceptive than his sister, that was for certain- though if her memories of her time in the loch were correct, she was younger than Hywel. "Somewhat common in the loch," she agreed with an incline of her head. "Certainly more common than down here."
"I was wondering if you remembered me," she said with a shrug of her thin white shoulders. "If you didn't, I didn't want to burden you by bringing up our old home unnecessarily."

So, she was from the north. His eyes narrowed slightly. As much as he knew he wasn't the only one who had left, nor the only ones who had escaped, there was a certain distrust for others of the same background. How could one tell between the fanatics and the escapees? "My memory's actually terrible," he replied smoothly, "but it was the scent and the slight accent. As much as we've been away for so long, the place still clings to our fur, no?"
Rhiannon's brow furrowed. She had been so young when they left, she barely remembered any actual faces, only the customs and stories her mother had told. "What brings you to the city then?" she was blunt, her expression had held a moment of surprise, but it was unreadable now, "surely you're not here to drag us all back to the north?"
"You arrived here after I did, so it's more likely that the reverse is true," Reynardine told Rhiannon, resisting the urge to laugh. As if she'd drag anyone back to the loch. Aggression was not her style. She turned her gaze to Hywel, whiskers twitching. "Memories certainly aren't quick to fade for me," she said with a shrug. "I left to escape the superstition and backstabbing that was rampant among the adults, not to force anyone back into that lifestyle."

Oh? He was surprised; he had assumed at first that they were the first ones from the north. When he had spoken of Herne and the great hunters and the monsters that laid in wait for any unsuspecting kit, the others had only given him weird looks, strange glances. He was about to ask what triggered her departure, but it seemed as if Rhiannon had questions first.
"So you know of the legends then?" Rhiannon's curiosity was palpable, her eyes gleaming with a certain fire he had seen before, "superstition, perhaps, but it's fascinating, no? That they used to speak of eternal life up in the north, and even in this forest, there are stories of cats who have risen once more...yet I don't know if our ceremonies apply to cats around here. They don't seem to know anything about the sacred rituals at all."
"Of course I know of the legends," Reynardine, in a tone that barely masked her faint disgust. "I've never brought them up to anyone, but no one has ever mentioned them to me, and they have their own way of gaining extended life- even if it's reserved for the leadership. I still think it's unnatural." Her instincts had always kept her as far removed from the superstitions back as was possible, but she knew plenty of fanatics would kill her just for speaking out against them, so she rarely did.
But these two had fled for a reason, and she assumed it was similar to hers, though she didn't really know. The gleam in Rhiannon's eyes was concerning. "You seek eternal life, then, Rhiannon?"

Hywel's expression was calculating as he peered at Reynardine. He, of course, agreed with her completely; the fanatics back home were insane. Still, the reproachful way she stared at Rhiannon made Hywel's hackles rise. If she meant any harm to Rhiannon, it didn't matter. Family always came first.
Rhiannon's expression twisted into a small smile. "Perhaps, but it's just an interest of mine, I suppose," she mused, "whether it's true or not. It's simply a curiosity; I want to know if what the cats gave their lives for has any true basis. Don't you want to know too? What our ancestors sacrificed everything for?" She didn't reveal her hand to those she didn't know, but certainly, anyone who had fled the north could relate.
Reynardine took a moment to think before speaking again. In truth, she felt Rhiannon was close to the fanatics back home, but she could also sense the trepidation with which Hywel was looking at her. She flicked back an ear, shrugging her white shoulders again noncommittally. She didn't wish the girl any harm, but she also didn't want to get too close to those who still dwelt in the land of insanity she had come from.
"Seems truer down here than it was up north. I never saw anyone live forever anywhere, and the talk down here may be just that- talk. Still, I suppose it would be interesting to see if the leaders here really do come back after dying, though I have no wish to go home."

"Me neither," Hywel muttered, glancing to Rhiannon as he spoke, "pretty sure they'd kill us if we ever showed our faces back there. You know how it was with their little...scapegoats, to say the least." He didn't trust Reynardine too much, and frankly, the way she looked at them seemed to speak more words than their little small talk did. There was something about her that just seemed to look into his very soul, and he found it rather uncomfortable.
Hide your soul away, his mother used to say, lest they steal what's left of it. It should've felt familiar, to have someone from the north here with them, but knowing that there were others kind of freaked him out a little. "So now that we're all here, do you think there's others?" he asked quietly, "others like us around here?"
"I doubt it. It's coincidence enough that you all appeared." Reynardine looked away, her words casual enough despite the uneasiness in her stomach. Something told her that there were others, some gut feeling or instinct she had always had but rarely voiced. "The world is a big place."
"How do you like Primal Instinct?" She asked, glancing between the siblings. Talk of home made her restless, and perhaps she could direct this conversation to a more neutral topic than immortality and sacrifical deaths.

Hywel shrugged. "It's...fine, I suppose," he replied with a shrug, "I always thought the city would be more....exciting. Suppose everything's a bit...underwhelming, if I may say so myself." He had heard from his travels of a place filled with parties and cats who only looked out for himself, turning a blind eye to everything else. That was why he had come here in the first place; a place where others looked aside meant that they were safe, after all.
"It's pretty nice," Rhiannon seemed to disagree, her eyes gleaming, "there's a lot going on, but you know, it's interesting learning about the world other than the loch. They have...very different beliefs down here, no?"
"Different beliefs, but many are more bloodthirsty down here." Reynardine blinked her split-colored eyes, flicking her whiskers. "I think I fall somewhere between you two. It's about what I was expecting, but I'm also not overly interested in their beliefs. The League at least gives me some level of autonomy in how I choose to live."
"What sectors are you both in?" The white-furred she-cat found that often, knowing what selection a cat had made in regards to their role gave her more insight into who they were.

Interesting. Rhiannon was certainly learning new things this way. Reynardine was an interesting cat, one of the few she couldn't seem to read. It was as if the other cat could read everything about Rhiannon instead, and while it made her uncomfortable, she was...interested in the other's perception of things.
"I'm in internal affairs," she replied with a shrug, "my brother's in foreign affairs. What about you?"
"Foreign affairs as well," Reynardine said, flicking her tail in amusement. Rhiannon had been the one to worry about her being an internal affairs member and chastising them, and also about her being there to drag them back to the loch, and in both cases it had been more likely for Rhiannon to have been the culprit.
"I enjoy the chance to learn about the other groups in more detail- what drew you to internal affairs?"
