Bermondsey smiled at the way Charlotte was with the kits. She had the same gentleness her mother had, despite everything they had lived through. "I'm sure they'd love to learn," he spoke, as the kits were practically bouncing on their paws. It'd be useful too, for them to know at least a little about how to take care of themselves and what herbs to take if they get sick. He had never paid much attention to the workings of the shamans back home, but surely, Charlotte must've figured some of them out. She had grown so much since they had last met.
"What kind of flowers?" Evenie piped up brightly, "we saw some on our way here! They were so pretty, there was a field and there were so many white ones everywhere! Oh, and the big purple puffy things!" The wildflowers were certainly growing well this year, and the fields of daisies and alliums had filled Evenie's dreams after that first sight.
Aleksy giggled as Charlotte spoke, before giving her a bright nod. "What did you want to be when you grew up, Charlotte?"

There was a part of her that was made very sad by the interaction with her younger brother and sister, precisely because of the way they made her smile. She had always wondered what it would have been like, had she kept her daughter. Was the protectiveness she felt over the small duo the same protectiveness she would have felt for Reynardine if she had allowed herself to form an attachment to her daughter? Her ear flicked as she tried to blink away the thoughts, coming back into focus.
"All sorts of them. I travel the whole world in search of herbs. You see, I know a family where there is something very, very wrong with them. There is a disease that runs in their minds and it hurts each and every one of them some how." She didn't make eye contact with any of them for a moment; the family was her own, the very family these two had been placed into. "My goal in life," she meowed, nodding to Aleksy as she answered his question as well, "has always been to find the herb or flower that cures that disease. I want to help that family so no one ever has to go through what they went through again." There was a steely resolution in Charlotte's voice as she said that last part. She would solve the curse, medically of course, one day.
"The flowers you saw, those were probably daisies," she guessed. "They've been growing well this time of year. Their leaves can be used as a traveling herb, or for aching joints if this old man here ever starts complaining about them," she meowed with a smile as she flicked her uncle's shoulder with her tail.

Bermondsey's jaw tightened at the mention of the curse. They were too young to know about it, to understand it, but he didn't stop Charlotte. They'd have to know sooner or later, he just wished they'd be less aware of it all. He hated the thought of it, that their lives may be governed by these rules and thoughts and things totally out of their control. They deserved better than this. They deserved peace of mind, they deserved a life far away from the league, they deserved happiness.
His eyes met Charlotte's after the story, as if telling her to keep the rest of the details on the down low. The kits, however, sat in rapt attention at her story, buzzing with questions in their mind. "Where is this family now?" Evenie asked brightly, "did you find the cure yet?"
Aleksy seemed more concerned. "What kind of disease is it? Can it spread? Will you get sick because you met them? Why isn't there a cure? Where are they now?"
The two seemed way too interested, and Bermondsey sighed. "Kits, these aren't topics for your ears at your age," he reminded gently, "Charlotte might not be comfortable talking about them." The kits pouted, giving their papa the little puppy-dog eyes, as he rolled his eyes, snorting in amusement at their antics.
Evenie seemed distracted enough at the mention of the daisies. "Can we help you pick them?" she asked brightly.
Aleksy, however, still seemed concerned. "Will these help that family you're talking about?"
